CBD and Skin Care

Products are popping up all over that utilize CBD for skin care. If you look at our own Bath and Body Collection, you will see we have some offerings around this as well. The questions you may be asking are “Why do skincare products benefit from CBD” and “Does it work?”. We are here to help break down those questions and assist you in making your decision for upgrading your own self-care and skin care routine.

CBD and Skin Care Growth Around the World

Ever since China legalized the use of CBD in a 2015 cosmetics security law, the CBD beauty trend has flourished among the nation’s young consumer class. In 2019, there were 433 requests submitted to the China Food and Drug Administration to use Cannabis Sativa Leaf Extract as a product ingredient. In 2020, that number rose to 880.

Single Care recently compiled reliable research and conducted a large-scale CBD survey around American consumers and found that 8% of all users are interested in skincare products. Also, according to a Research Specialist at Million Insights, the global CBD skin care market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 32.9% over the forecast period and is expected to reach a value of USD 1.7 billion by 2025.

CBD and Skincare

So, people are asking for it, but does it work and how?

According to Danielle Frey, owner and licensed aesthetician at Bloom Skincare Mendocino, the two leading causes of skin aging and common skin issues like acne and hyperpigmentation are:

“The endocannabinoid system is a complex matrix of cell receptors responsible for balancing many key functions of the skin, such as oil production, melanocyte production (also known as pigmentation), and much more,” says Frey.

She adds, “CBD is an incredibly effective ingredient in skin care due to it being a powerful antioxidant and providing anti-inflammatory benefits.”

While research into CBD is ongoing, what we do know so far seems to back this up. Here’s how the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits of CBD affect the body’s largest organ:

  • Regulates oil production. The overproduction of sebum is thought to be a contributing factor of acne. According to a 2014 study, CBD may have an anti-inflammatory effect on sebocytes, the skin cells that produce sebum.
  • Helps reduce inflammation. As an anti-inflammatory, CBD may be able to help reduce swelling, pain, and redness from existing breakouts, or irritation from skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
  • Hydrates dry skin. Research from 2009 suggests that CBD may be effective for dry, dehydrated skin.

While we’re still scratching the surface of CBD, “It really is incredibly fascinating and promising in terms of the many benefits phytocannabinoids provide for the skin,” says Frey. “I think we will only see more and more use of these types of phytocannabinoids in skin care and wellness formulations in the years to come.”

Additionally, The Journal for Clinical Investigation published findings that proved CBD helps regulate the skin’s naturally occurring oils to prevent buildup that causes acne. Board certified dermatologist Michelle Green, M.D. agrees, and sites this study as evidence that CBD also has anti-aging properties as well as its oil fighting benefits. “It is a botanical antioxidant, which makes it a powerhouse for anti-aging protection from environmental damage,” Dr. Green says.

CBD also helps heal acne faster and helps reduce the look of scarring. By reducing the redness associated with acne, your skin will heal more evenly in tone. And by reducing the collagen laden cells that are produced in scarring, CBD oils reduce the look of puckering and uneven texture as your skin creates new tissue.
